The Author

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognise that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other's loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

Book Tour, Review & Giveaway: Indigo Incite — Jacinda Buchmann

This book is definitely young reader friendly because it is easy to read. It has some action, a bit of romance and a happy ending. Normally that would make it my kind of book, however there were a few things I didn’t like. Instant love is always an instant turn off for me and I felt it existed in this novel.

My Review

This book is definitely young reader friendly because it is easy to read. It has some action, a bit of romance and a happy ending. Normally that would make it my kind of book, however there were a few things I didn’t like. Instant love is always an instant turn off for me and I felt it existed in this novel.

I enjoyed the beginning of the book. As things were being set up, it was interesting to see how the twins had had different experiences. I think the fact they lived with a foster family should have been a big flag as to what could happen later in the book.

When equal numbers of males and females started being assembled, I guessed that they would be paired up romantically. I don't really like instant-love in any media. There's nothing to develop apart from deepening attraction and a full on relationship. Largely instant love, or even instant attraction, is pretty dull. Rather than the icing on the cake, I found the romance in this book to be a bit of unnecessary pepper in the story. Perhaps a trait of being an indigo child in this book is falling instantly in love?

Besides that issue, it was an enjoyable book. There was travel, a mystery to be unravelled and a grand escape. I didn’t always feel that some of the explanations given were believable and often I found the lack of obstacles the group encountered implausible. But there were a few parts of this book I did really like – such as the passwords used by the government and the kooky couple (I’m being vague to avoid any potential spoilers, sorry!).

The Buzz

“Children with cerebral palsy, like Suhana, the special 7-year-old child in this book, might never take a first step, say their first words or even do the same things other kids can do. But, they can understand kindness, love and true friendship. This is a story about two young 7-year-old girls whose friendship will span a lifetime and whose love will never die … There are so many themes that are brought to light in this wonderfully illustrated book. Friendship, understanding, love, kindness and trust…This mother and daughter have presented a well written, special, colorfully illustrated book that is definitely a must read for children in the lower grades, read aloud in every classroom, hospital groups, book store book signings and even at centers with children who have CP who can learn that they can do anything––all they need to do is try.” ~ Fran Lewis, former Reading and Writing Staff Developer at NYC Public Schools

“Promoting friendship, respect, and support, this children’s book aides in teaching others that art can help overcome and accept the differences of physical characteristics in others. It shows the bond that a mother and daughter share caring and loving those who have physical or mental disabilities as they convey how to be a true friend.” ~ Conny Crisalli, Book Pleasures

“This heartfelt story shares what it would be like to have a friend with cerebral palsy. Parents, teachers and young readers will appreciate the stories purpose and enjoy the colorful illustrations depicting the moods of Suhana and the love and caring she receives from her friend…Both authors have done an excellent job of educating us on how to be role models by opening our minds and hearts to the possibilities.” ~ Kristi’s Book Nook

“My Friend Suhana, for which Kindle and ePub editions are also available, was inspired by the experiences of the authors. While helping her mother with a special needs class at a local community center, a seven year old girl befriends another seven year old girl named Suhana who has cerebral palsy. It is a simple tale of love and friendship that will warm everyone’s heart.” ~ Wayne Walker, Home School Book Reviews

“My Friend Suhana is a delightful read for a children’s book. Very well illustrated with respect, friendship, and advocacy all in mind at the same time.” ~ Dawn Cruzan, President, Camp Craig Allen for all abilities

“This is the story of a seven-year-old’s first attempt at unconditional love. Tough but tender, inspirational yet utterly real, this is a small gem of a tale. Review & Giveaway: The Enchantress of Lynniah — A.L. Bawden

Bawden constructs a vivid world which leaves both the characters and reader in wonder. In such a rich world, Bawden manages to balance several characters and gives them all a unique sense of personality and life. Family is clearly an important element in this story which is refreshing and separates it from a lot of other fantasy works where teenagers often venture by themselves without much considering their family bonds. I think this would suit younger readers because it is both enjoyable and easy to read and occasionally challenging with longer sentences and vocabulary choices.

Good Reads Summary

Have you ever come across a vain, impetuous little creature called a Mandie, and had to quickly dodge one of her poisonous darts? Or, have you ever imagined having to sing to a fruit to get it to peel open? Perhaps you've bumped into freakishly large, blue men, called Dreads? Well, with all of that, along with evil Nymphs and blood thirsty Banelorgs - these are things you've only likely experienced if you've had a nice long visit to Lynniah.
Corrah's life suddenly and drastically changes with the unexpected and inexplicable death of her loving mother, Lillian. She and her two sisters, Gaela and Stormy, are suddenly thrust into the unknown and sent to live with their mysterious Aunt Rainee, who lives in the seemingly bewitched village, called Lynniah. Living in a house that their mother's family had occupied for hundreds of years, they find clues that begin to unlock the startling reality that they are all part of an important magical heritage. A heritage that has been kept secret to save them from a dark and powerful enemy. Corrah has to find a way to battle and balance the onslaughts of loss, young love, and learn to uncover the personal power she has hidden inside her to overcome overwhelming adversity.

My Review

Bawden constructs a vivid world which leaves both the characters and reader in wonder. In such a rich world, Bawden manages to balance several characters and gives them all a unique sense of personality and life. Family is clearly an important element in this story which is refreshing and separates it from a lot of other fantasy works where teenagers often venture by themselves without much considering their family bonds. I think this would suit younger readers because it is both enjoyable and easy to read and occasionally challenging with longer sentences and vocabulary choices.

While I usually attribute family patterns (such as similar appearances, jobs, personalities or powers) to laziness, I feel that Bawden didn’t rely too heavily on this. Yes, the protagonist looked like her mother, but that didn’t mean she was instantly the most powerful. Similarly, the fact that Stormy had some things in common with Rhiannon didn’t inevitably (and unreasonably) lead to her choosing the dark side. The use of patterns and comparisons help foreshadow in which direction the series may go, and I think younger readers will appreciate the links as showing the strength of family bonds.

One thing I certainly loved about this book was that family is such a crucial element to the storyline. Sibling rivalry, mistrust and miscommunication along with the theme of love and belonging are strongly present. I’m not sure if enough books for younger readers (and perhaps even older readers) really look at the importance of family and how integral to someone’s life it is. Bawden maps out the character’s family and, it may seem, the reason for their differences.

However, there are still many things that remain a mystery by the end of the book. The prologue, for example, is a short scene describing the final moments of the Corrah’s mother, but it leaves much unsaid. Even by the end of the book the truth of this murder is still unknown. New mysteries arise throughout the book, even in the final chapter! So I have no doubt that readers will be as compelled as I am to continue reading the series to find out the answers to all their questions.

Overall I thought this was a great book, though I thought Stormy’s later chapter felt rather skimmed over. I would have loved to see greater depth or even a few more chapters about her surroundings, escape, treatment while kidnapped and more character development for both her and those who aided her escape. In the same way, the notion of the ‘chosen one’ and the book of the elders felt brushed over and I didn’t really feel their gravity or importance to the plot.

I do believe that younger readers will really enjoy this book. It does feel very female dominated (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing!), but there is plenty of danger and action to engage male readers who may find they do not identifying with the three sisters and who may not be particularly interested in romance and safe magic in a fantasy world.

Praise for The Enchantress of Lynniah

"I loved this book! It had a bit of everything...fantasy, adventure, romance, intrigue, and really unique characters! I was immediately drawn in and it held my attention throughout the story. It's the type of book I could read over and over again. I highly recommend it if your looking for a fun read." ~Shelly on Goodreads

"This book was awesome! It stayed with me for days, I kept thinking about all the characters. I can't wait for the sequel!" ~Emma on Goodreads
